Notes

  • For jacks, position numbers are assigned looking into the jack with the locking tab down and position 1 at the left.
  • For plugs, position numbers are assigned looking at the conductor side of the plug, i.e. with the locking tab underneath, and position 1 at the left.
  • 8-position jacks and plugs are frequently, and incorrectly, referred to as RJ45 connectors (see Wikipedia - "RJ45" naming confusion).
T568A 8P 8C 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

This is the primary assignment scheme specified in ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-B "Commercial Building Telecommunications Cabling Standard".

ANSI/TIA/EIA-570-B "Residential Telecommunications Cabling Standards" recommends only T568A.

Common in residential installations because assignments for Pair 1 and 2 are the same as the RJ (i.e. USOC) voice standards.

U.S. Gov't requires T568A for wiring done under federal contract.

This is an optional assignment scheme specified in the ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-B standard to be used "if necessary to accommodate certain 8-pin cabling systems".

Previously called "AT&T 258A" or "WECO 258A".

US National Communication Systems Federal Telecommunications Recommendations do not recognize T568B.
